Here's Smithers loading up the pig.

That thing yanked his chain pretty good on the way down the washboarded bomber into the valley. There was a fair amount of snow over the road that was dificult to negotiate at speed too.

We thought briefly about hitching a ride out for more beer.

In the pic below you can see the aluvial fan that rises out of the valley just to the right of Mark's head. We could see the road cutting up it as we were bombing down.

Smithers took a beating on the way down from that Sibex fork in the front and the Bob in the back. When he got to the turnoff to the Springs he'd found his happy place and wasn't leaving. It was a nice camp. A little kit fox left us chicolate kisses around in echange for the drippings from our cans of turkey chili.

The first hour on Sunday was killer with smooth roads and a fast pace. You can find good conditions on the shoulder that last for miles at a time down there. not as bad as your would think driving it in a car.

Riding past the Saline Dunes.

After riding up the fan for an hour or so we were pretty high above the valley. The cool thing about riding in the desert is that you can see how far you've come. The perspective of distance over time is a trip when you're going maybe 5 MPH.

Grapevine Canyon.

And then we were at the top and celebration became necessary.

It was a pretty mellow ride from the top of grapevine canyon out to 190. Rolling hills and nice smooth DH. A Joshua tree forest and some nice streches of pavement. I'd driven the broken pavement the night before, and again I noticed that what is rough and crappy with 4 wheels, can be nice and smooth with only two.

Great touring with McD and Smithers. He said you want the crosses hard to separate (with his hand strength that means a lot hard to separate). (correct me on any of this)

After a while Dr. Shredmor wandered out of the woods where he hibernates for various interminable lengths and proceeded to prepare us some killer tacos made out of a strange other-worldly carnage that tasted vaguely like chicken can't recall what exactly he called it. It was delish. Dogs were walloped, cats were tortured with a makeshift riding crop, pictures were viewed. Thanks Steve, and Dr. Shredmor! Sorry we didn't get to meet Denise. Hopefully you have to stop by on your way to/from the handmade bike show.Would have posted a photo of Dr. S, but they all had this freaky lens flare in them…

Saturday we rolled down to Sedona to investigate the alleged “shredding” there. Reports are completely accurate! Perfect dirt, rolling trails, tough rock ledges, and tiny bits of mud. We rode the Bell Rock path to the Little Horse Trail, to The Llama trail back to Bell Rock. It was perfect.

Camped near the Desert museum that night near Tucson. I was going to get up at the butt crack and ride up Tucson MTN, but about 12:00 AM I woke up from a dream… WITH AMAZING STOMACHE CRAMPS. Started walking the ¼ mile to the toilet. About half way I started wondering if I’d make it. Couldn’t walk faster due to the pressure. Stopping and doubling over didn’t help. The light on the side of the outhouse seemed to me moving farther away, but it was just my vision getting blury and vague. I made it. It wasn’t pretty. I made Smella drive me the next time. By the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th trips I was able to drive myself.

But I’m ok now.

When I got back to RTO my bike was right where I’d left it, with enough air in the tires to get me home.

-M

Making the best of it

Sooo, since old man winter has barely risen from his slumber and not given us anything snowboard/ski on. I say F*^k him! I will ride my bike. I've done some pretty good rides as of late. Lee, Smithers, J. Walker and I joined Mark The Shark on his quest to conquer both sides of Gieger on his fixie Saturday. Lee & Smithers are still finding their legs so they cut out somewhere on the ride up to the summit. Walker and I paced Mark down the other side(truck route), we all suffered on the way back up the steep way to VC. Mark averaged 30mph on the way back down Gieger and topped out at 35mph. I can't remember how many gear inches he's running, but he had 'em spinning fast.
Today I crested Peavine and looked over the other side and said "what the hell". I dropped down and headed for Cow Canyon. The top part through the aspens was a little sketchy. I had to tri-pod a couple times over the ice, but came out unscathed. Now this is when things get worrysome. I'm sure everybody knows about Peavine mud, that sticky, nasty shit that will stop you dead in your tracks. To this point the mud was either to wet to stick bad or a little frozen, sometimes both. When I hit the big access road down to the top of the single track I had to pick my lines very carefully. Shoot for the puddles and snow/ice and avoid anything brown at all cost. I got lucky and only had to a short bushwhack to avoid disaster. Plowing through 3''-4" of slush and goop took up more time and energy than I anticipated, but it was all worth it when I finally made it to the top of Cow Canyon. I hadn't been there since the burn, but I have to admit it was kind of cool. It's this black lunerscape with a black twisty ribbon made of tire tracks. The trail was in awsome condition! The moisture and amount of traffic created this high traction loam that was an absolute gas to ride. I don't know what the normal climb up to the trail is like with the mud, ice and construction, but if you get a chance to do this trail, DO IT! By the time I hit pavement the bike and I were pretty covered in muck and the gears wre making wierd noises. I stopped into Sinclare Imports and tracked down Monty to bum a rag and chain lube. I spun home from Verdi tired and happy!

Gris,

Today's Martial Arts Feature

Here we have a classic battle between East and West. We were poking around and talking to the owner and his little 10 year old son was running around.

These two strange older gentlemen came in and poked around and chatted a bit. One was extra strange wearing super short cut-offs and running shoes w/o socks. We bought some stupid piece of junk and moved on.

Got a call from the sherif when we got back after we'd gone to bed and had been asleep for an hour or so. Seems old-weird-cut-off dude was having a little private personal artifact showing with the owner's 10 year old son while no one was looking. Aparently he hadn't anything on under those cut-offs...

Long story short: as Soma was leaving after we had Paninis this afternoon at Michael's Deli next to College Cyclery, old-weird-cut-off dude sat down at the next table.

Floyd's not feeling so fabulous right about now.

-M

How's this Suckas?!!!

Just laziness I suppose...(sizzletits)!

The Bacon Strip

Well, Well, Well

This hombre might be goin legit...I might have a ski patrol position at one of the Tahoe locals! Takin that chump change to the bank biaaaatches! Anyway, I have to do a ski test with the higher ups, the brass. They asked me if I can ski the 58's - the Pallisades, I said, "if you magically put some snow on those bithces, then I'll drop the knee down those f---ers." The clock is completely functional, including the annoying buzz alarm, but the radio hadn't worked for years. I took it upon myself a few weeks ago to see if I could get the radio working, took the back off the thing, and lo and behold, there resided no less than four (count 'em) glass vacuum tubes. I felt like I'd just walked through a time machine. I removed the tubes and took them down to the local electronics supply store, which, for some reason, had a tube-testing machine. One of the tubes proved faulty, and to my unending surprise, the shop had a replacement for sale. $12.95 later, I reinstalled the tubes and powered up. The tubes glowed a faint, warm red-orange, and a moment later, the soft, nostalgic background hum of 60-Hz AC power issued from the speaker. A flip of the tuner, and -- shazam-- KCOL, broadcasting at 610 kilocycles, was heard through faint static.

There is no reason save geekiness to have fixed this thing--there's absolutely nothing on AM radio that's worth listening to, unless the Broncos ever make the playoffs again. But--ya gotta admit, having a vacuum tube AM radio that works is pretty damn cool.

SphincterBoy

my beautiful new podlings!

view, mutants, my lovely little podlings! Your cover article today on the North/South connector claims that more roads (automobile-centric commuter routes) are needed to avoid “southern California style gridlock.”

Metropolitan Southern California is gridlocked because of sprawling low-density development and a lack of effective public transportation or commuting alternatives to the automobile, i.e. bicycles or trains. That means that people live a long way from work and have to drive to get there. If we want to avoid the same fate here more roads and the influx of automobiles are not the answer.

Driving is a choice. Our freedom to choose alternatives to cars is being curtailed by our own inability to plan beyond our current tank of gas.

-M

What's the plan?

I know I missed all barley soda meetings this week, my bad. It was still a challenge. Here's why:

If I built one side first completely there were two problems, 1) threading the spokes down from the other side was a PITA becasue the 36 spokes on the other side almost made it impossible to get them down and seated and swiveled into position, and 2) having one side fully built pulled that side so far to the center that the other flange was too far for the spokes to reach. even with the long nipples.

So I took it all apart and threaded the leading spokes on one side and the trailing spokes on the other. then one trailing on the first side, then two leading on the other side, then two on the first side, and so on until it was done. As it stands now all the spokes are threaded on so that the end of each spoke is prettymuch right at the inside face of the rim 3 cross.

I also dropped spokes first so I wouldn't have to bend them all crazy to get them through again. I'm super stoked I got this to work! I even have the valve hole spokes right too.

sweetness. Can't wait to build another set! If I can get this trued maybe I'll test it on another SS canyon ride tomorrow?

-M

Nuner_patrol

today was one of those days (that seem to be pretty common these days) that the alpine start deslumber results in a shuffle downstairs, a pat on the dogs' heads, a quart of water and a peek outside the garden window over the kitchen sink. humph. still dark. snowy. warm, warm bed and tooo f_ckin' cold to do much. shuffle back upstairs and... R.E.M.

now it's like 8 or 9 and i'm hungry and the caffiene burning blast furnace is running on reserve. outta bed, joe's a cookin' but whup, whoa. only one stiff pour of .5 and .5 in the first pot of coffee and into the rig and off to the market. a full cart of produce later and i've got a real load of raw materials to sustain another few days of creative living. i'm home by 10ish. soonthereafter The Shredder is upandatem and i've got a mess of eggs, peppers, salsa, mushrooms, and Bacon. and coffee. Huck Turn-er-on-er is virtually done dressing out his 1x1 & the Nuninator is ready to take a rest day from being an ice pirate up in the Sierra no snowpack. he jumps on the offer to ride The Shredder's Old Bridgestone MB-4 or -5 (?) {now w/ horizontal rear d.o.'s -thanks Vulture!- and a rigid-rigid, an old school single speed mountain bike} and we head for the Keystone Canyon. collie/huskie dogs and wolf/dog mutants are stiding along and the cold squeeky snow reminds us we should've worn more socks. somewhere out in the trail we encounter Huck, who has apparently been de-burdened of his cellular telephone [blessing in disguise?] on his new 1x and all toothy. apparently he's also abandoned all those gears! let's see, his Blurr has like 8 or 9 speeds in the rear and 3 in the front? now he's on just 1 in the front and 1 in the rear... that makes like 10 something orphaned gears? he should get his $50 bucks back!!!

for a short trail ride it was Fly. not many users out there on a <0 January afternoon, but the trails were perfect. too bad, as it was a sort of harmonic convergence of 4 1-speeders in the sagebrush. if this hi pressure pattern holds, i'll probably go for it again tomorrow. maybe earlier though, or after tearing up the cord on the groomers. i haven't even used the lifteo thing yet this year. Andy, the new forecaster has been putting up some great reports that have been very easy for lay-persons to understand and have been much apreciated. I spoke with him briefly at the Rose Ski day and he seems to be a cool hombre despite his free-heeling lifestyle.

Anyway, Let’s all go to Kirkwood and say thanks to the SAC!

Other items: I spoke with Griss this morning and he, and I, are trying to get some riding in despite it being ski season. So let’s try to coordinate on some saddle time. Maybe a snow-ride Tuesday AM, if not a Fixie Ride after work to the end of the bike path in sparks, I’ll snag a sixer of PBR for whomever meets me out there…

Hopefully Saturday will be a good day to get up BEFORE 10 and log some vertical, somewhere, on snow, sans rocks (forcrissakes)! I'll get the picture up soon. I was finally able to shimmy an account(I had to lie, cheat, and thieve to make it happen - I always prevail)...First, I've been busy with the holidays. Second, I had serious trouble trying to create my account. And third, I'm a bit challenged when it comes to technology! Maybe I shouldn't let that be known since I was invited to be a contributor?!
Enough explanations! The tecate toten Bandito is here in the Sierra Nevadas, and it's dumping out...I believe the resorts reported 4"-6" this morning and were expecting another 12"-18" by tonight...I must say it came with a vengence. So wax those skis and boards and head into the backcountry...don't wanna here any excuses from the peons(grislybikedork I mean geek) who have to work...call in sick or quit - it's really that simple. keep praying to the snow gods because right now it's jiving...if the snow ceases then all ya'lls ladies have to strip down to thier b-day uniforms and dance and frolic while I drink my wine and stroke my belly - at my abode of course - no peeping Mcds, geeks, or wolfs either - otherwise it won't work - seriously!!! Ya'll dig?! No bull, it really works! Then it cums(sorry for the typo) with a vengence again - the snow that is!
Have a great night everyone, see ya'll on the mountain...I'll be on telemark skis...that's what men do! For you Strippers interested in the funnest 100 mile mtb race, with excellent support, best be on the game for registration. It fills up mighty quick. Date's also pushed back till July 8, probably to try and break last year's high temp record. That's ok by me, but I may not wear the long sleeve woolie this time...

http://www.cascadecreampuff.com/

Word on the street is that the colossal task of organizing the event has changed hands this year. Waited a few minutes for J.R. but proceeded as it wasn't totally clear he was comming.

It was dark for the first few miles. McD cought up to us pre Poeville, just in time to see me faceplant into a ditch. Too early for bunnyhopping. We proceeded up the road past the pond and to the intersection with the main road.

Near the top of peavine we cought the waft of coffee and maple syrup. We were met by Matt and Mike from Patagonia who proceeded to grill us some killer cakes. Those guys rode up the night before and camped out. The Christmas festival came to the Protestants and the secular world from the Roman Catholic church. However, the Roman Catholic church did NOT get Christmas from the original Apostles. It's not even in the Bible!!!

Now just in case you may think I just have something personally against Christmas, or as the psychologists saying, I just had a bad childhood so I feel bad about Christmas, or worse, I belong to a religious cult!!.... let us see what the Catholic and secular Encyclopedias themselves are saying about Christmas!!

"Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the Church...the first evidence of the feast is from Egypt."
"Pagan customs centering around the January calends gravitated to Christmas."
"...In the Scriptures, no one is recorded to have kept a feast or held a great banquet on his [Jesus] birthday. It is only sinners who make great rejoicings over the day in which they were born into this world"Catholic Encyclopedia, 1911 Edition, published by the Roman Catholic Church

"...Christmas was not among the earliest festivals of the church...."Encyclopedia Britannica, 1946 edition

"Christmas... It was, according to many authorities, not celebrated in the first centuries of the Christian church, as the Christian usage in general was to celebrate the death of remarkable persons [eg Communion - death of Christ] rather than their birth...""...A feast was established in memory of this event [the birth of Jesus] in the fourth century. In the fifth century the Western Church ordered it to be celebrated forever ON THE DAY OF THE OLD ROMAN FEAST OF THE BIRTH OF SOL [SUN], as no certain knowledge of the day of Christ's birth existed." EMPHASIS MINEEncyclopedia Americana, 1944 Edition

Christmas was not celebrated by the Church UNTIL the FOURTH CENTURY. Christians did NOT celebrate Christmas for the first 300 years - longer than the entire history of the United States of America!!

Jesus was not born on December 25th
Christmas Day - December 25th - is near to the middle of winter in the Northerm Hemisphere - including the Palestine region or Judaea. Was Jesus born during the winter? Let's see what the Scriptures has to say...

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night."LUKE 2:8

The shepherds did NOT keep their sheep in the fields during December! The sheep were brought in under cover before mid-October to protect them from the cold rainy season that would follow.

The "ninth month" corresponds roughly to December today. You see this time of year was characterised by winter rains in Judaea. The sheep were not in the fields at that time!!Here's what the Adam Clarke Commentary (Vol 5, page 370, New York ed) has to say about the date of Christ's birth....

"It was an ancient custom among Jews of those days to send out their sheep to the fields and deserts about the Passover (early spring), and bring them home at commencement of the first rain,...""During the time they were out, the shepherds watched them night and day. As...the first rain began early in the month of Marchesvan, which answers to part of our October and November, we find that the sheep were kept out in the open country during the whole summer. And, as these shepherds had not yet brought home their flocks, it is a presumptive argument that October had not yet commenced, and that, consequently, our Lord was not born on the 25th of December, when no flocks were out in the fields; nor could He have even been born later than September, as the flocks were still in the fields by night. On this very ground, the nativity in December should be given up. The feeding of the flocks by night in the fields is a chronological fact..."

The exact date of Jesus' birth is entirely unknown, though evidently He was born sometime during September which is six months after the Passover. If God had intended for us to celebrate the birthday of Jesus, why then didn't God reveal the exact date to us in the Scriptures???

The true origins of Christmas

So where did it all begin??The concept of Christmas originated in ancient Egypt in the days of King Osiris and Queen Isis around about 3000 B.C. - long before the Christian faith was even thought of!! After the untimely death of King Osiris, his wife, Isis, propogated the demonic doctrine of the survival of Osiris as a spirit. She claimed a full grown evergreen tree sprang overnight from a dead stump, symbolising the new life of the Osiris spirit from his death. On each anniversary of Osiris birth, which was the date we now know as December 25th, Isis would leave gifts around this tree. Isis became the "Queen of Heaven", and Osiris became the reborn "divine son of heaven". Osiris later became, through the later Phoenicans, Baal the Sun-god. The "mother and child" became chief objects of worship by the Babylonians, from which it spread over the world under various names, such as, Cybel & Deoius in Asia, Fortuna & Jupiter in pagan Rome. Then during the fourth and fifth century, the Romans under the new popular "Christianity" popularised the "mother and child" concept especially around Christmas time - from which we have many of the Christmas carols such as "Silent Night Holy Night" with it's familiar "mother and child" theme.

The Pagan Origin of The Christmas Tree

The concept of the Christmas Tree originated around 3000 B.C. in ancient Egypt with King Osiris and Queen Isis. During the Middle Ages, the Germans believed the evergreen trees were especially imbued with life since they remained green throughout all of winter. Greenery was prominent in pagan winter celebrations in honour of the tree spirit or spirit of fertility. The Romans trimmed the trees with trinkets and toys at that time of year. The Druids tied gilded apples to tree branches. For many, a tree decorated with orbs and fruit-like object symbolised the tree of life in the garden of Eden.

The Pagan Origin of The Holly WreathMistletoe and Yule Log

The mistletoe were used at the festival of the winter solstice by ancient pagans because it was considered sacred to the sun. The mistletoe supposedly had miraculous healing powers, probably due to the fact that not only the plant remained green throughout winter but it actually bore fruit during this time, a type for fertility spirits!! This led to the tradition of "kissing under the mistletoe" - occuring early in the night of revelry and drunken debauchery, celebrating the death of the "old sun" and birth of the "new sun" at the solstice. Holly berries were also considered sacred to the sun-god. Holly was revered along with the mistletoe, with decorations in those greeneries prominent in buildings and places of worship during the winter festival - leading to the holly wreath that we have today. The burning of the Yule Log originated with the Druids and their ritual burning of a carefully chosen log during the winter. The word "yule" is derived from the old Anglo-Saxon word "hweol" which means "wheel" - a pagan symbol of the sun. Indeed the "Yule Log" is in fact the "Sun Log"!!

The Pagan Origin of Exchanging Gifts at Christmas

The wonderful tradition of exchanging gifts during Christmas. That excitement of looking forward to seeing what your loved one buys for you for Christmas. Oh of course, it is "Christian" to be giving gifts to one another.... but is it?? Let us see what the Bibliotheca Sacra (vol 12 pp 153-155) says about the exchanging of gifts at Christmas...

"The interchange of presents between friends is alike characteristic of Christmas and the Saturnalia, and MUST HAVE BEEN ADOPTED BY CHRISTIANS FROM THE PAGANS, as the admonition of Tertullian plainly shows." Emphasis mine

The exchanging of gifts does not honour Christ at all. Suppose it is YOUR birthday and yet at your party, your friends and relatives exchange gifts among themselves and almost completely ignore you!! This is exactly what happens at Christmas - we exchange gifts among ourselves, but usually don't have enough money left over to continue our giving to our churches!! Just ask any pastor!! The giving to the church usually doesn't get back to normal until March next year!! In any case it's not Jesus' birthday anyway!! - His birthday is in September most probably and the exact date is not known.

The wise men gave Jesus gifts because He was a KING of the Jews - it was not because it was His birthday. It was customary to give gifts to someone who is a King, just as it is so in many cultures today. In any case, the wise men didn't give any gifts to Jesus until long after His birthday.

"Verse 11 (They presented unto him gifts) The people of the east never approached the presence of kings and great personages, without a present in their hands. The custom is often noticed in the Old Testament, and still prevails in the east, and in some of the newly discovered South Sea Islands."Adam Clarke Commentary, vol 5, page 46

The exchanging of gifts among friends and relatives at Christmas is not found in the Scriptures, it is derived from paganism.

-Restlessape

bienvenidos, Nooner

The Bacon Strip grows thanks to our recent draft. I can't believe those boogerheads don't understand. I wrote some articles for the Foundation For North American Wild Sheep a few years ago. The only reason that industry is so successfull politically is because of the money the throw at it and the taxes on hunting gear that go towards its regulation. Think of a 10% tax on MTB parts and how much we spend and how far that would go (and how much some of us save on gas not driving every day).

Good article, but clearly those guys still don't get it. I may be wrong, I know that I don't do enough to make it better.

-M

(edit: What I meant by that last statement is that while a good portion of that article talked about successes in trailbuilding within the system it seems strange that the comments would focus on going back out and building more bootleg trails that are just going to be torn down again.)
Further discussion: Is a wood ladder-drop in the national forrest any different than one in your back yard in town? Are constructed features, other than those necessary for building good trails, adding to or taking away from the natural environment we go out there to enjoy? i.e. peavine dirt, rim trail dirt, holeintheground rocks... Thanks to the nice landings McD was only marred with grass stains. For Turkey day, For the Bacon Strip, for the hellofit: The turkey challenge, redux...

Hope your day is tryptophantastic!!!

-M

RenoBikeProject

Photos by the-cool ass bike geek Justin "Ubiquitous" Sullivan.(correction: on reviewing his blog, Justin is clearly a punk, possibly a punk-ass. It was fun. Black Label was there with ther many monster bikes including a 5-high that was ridden superman no hands through the parking lot as a pretty fine exit. From home. Here's the plan:

1)leave the house @ 6:00 AM.
2)bundle up best I can cause it'll be cold.
3)Ride my Bianchi in normal commuting mode (42:15, fixed, (17t back-up freewheel), 32mm tires)
4)stop at least once for coffee no sooner than Java Joes in Carson.
5)I should have 6 hours before my ride catches up.

I'm taking bets.
